COMPANY OVERVIEW

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is one of Southern California’s most iconic seasonal destinations. Each spring, 55 acres of giant tecolote ranunculus flowers burst into color, drawing visitors from across the region for a limited-time experience unlike anything else in the area. But iconic doesn’t mean easy to market. With the fields in bloom for just roughly 2.5 months and ads running for only 3.5 months total, every dollar and every day of the season carries real weight.

THE CHALLENGE

Seasonal attractions face a marketing problem that’s easy to overlook: a broad campaign that tries to speak to everyone ends up resonating with no one. A military family motivated by a discount, an LA day-tripper weighing the drive, and a Carlsbad local who could visit any weekend all have completely different reasons to show up. They were all receiving the same generic message.

Compounding that, the season itself doesn’t stand still. It moves through distinct phases: Opening week, peak bloom, and a final-weeks push, each requiring its own creative direction and messaging strategy. Executing across multiple audiences and multiple campaign phases simultaneously, inside a 3.5-month window with no runway for recovery, left very little margin for error. The previous approach also leaned heavily on static image ads, leaving the visual spectacle of the fields largely untapped in a video-first social landscape.

THE SOLUTION

Audience-first Targeting

Rather than broadcasting one message across Southern California, we segmented by region and motivation. Military communities received ads highlighting The Flower Fields’ military discount, a highly relevant hook for them. Los Angeles audiences, facing a longer drive, were served messaging around making it a day trip. Local Carlsbad residents got a different nudge entirely: skip the tourist crowds and enjoy the fields right in your backyard.

Modern Video Creative

The fields are visually spectacular, and static images weren’t doing them justice. We introduced platform-tailored short-form video into the creative mix, giving the campaign a dynamic, eye-catching edge that static ads simply couldn’t match in a crowded social feed.

Retargeting Funnel

Not every potential visitor is at the same point in their decision. General website visitors received ads spotlighting key attractions, including The Butterfly Encounter, to deepen their interest. Users who had abandoned their cart received ads walking them through the reservation process, addressing a known drop-off point where the ticketing flow created friction.

Creative Execution

We built and deployed creative for each stage of the season. Early-season ads highlighted surrounding attractions while the flowers worked their way to full bloom. At peak, we led with the fields in their full natural color. In the final weeks, urgency took over. Every transition required fresh creative, new copy, and precise timing, all delivered within that same compressed window.

THE RESULTS

  • 29% less ad spend generated 22% more revenue YoY
  • 73% increase in return on ad spend year over year
  • 34% revenue increase in April 2025, the busiest month of the season
  • Military audience ads outperformed overall ROAS by 32%

CONCLUSION

The Flower Fields campaign is proof that smarter strategy beats bigger budgets. Precise audience targeting and short-form video creative built for each phase of the season made the difference. Any business running paid social can benefit from getting more intentional about who they’re talking to. When your targeting is sharper and your creative actually stops the scroll, your budget works WAY harder. You don’t always need to spend more. You need to spend smarter.
